Last night the Southeast Dubois School Board was updated by corporation superintendant Rick Allen about a technology initiative he hopes will take effect within the next two years. Allen is looking at acquiring Google Chromebook devices for all high school students in grades 9 thru 12.

Allen says the device is not a computer but similar to a laptop.

The devices run off wireless internet, and Allen says the school’s infrastructure has already been set up for wireless in the past two years.

The school corporation is still investigating the potential for using chrome books on a 1 to 1 ration with students.

New Intercom For Forest Park

Also last night, the board approved a bid of $16,000 from Ohio Valley Communications to replace the intercom system at Forest Park Junior-Senior High School.  The over 36 year old sound system had not been updated since 1996.  Superintendent Rick Allen says replacing the former system that began to fail in the last month was a must. The work to replace the intercom system is expected to begin this week.

Reform on the Way for School Board Elections

Last night, the school board also cleared up a discrepancy in the requirement for board members representing Ferdinand Township to reflect the corporation’s understanding of the School Board makeup.

Allen says it has been understood that one member is at-large and can live anywhere in the school district. Also, a board member from each of the three townships including Ferdinand, Jefferson and Jackson are  represented. And lastly one board member must reside in the town of Ferdinand.

The common understanding was that the Ferdinand township member had to live outside of the town limits, but that stipulation was not part of the organizational document at the county courthouse.

Last night the school board voted to change the document to reflect the common understanding.

Kindergarten Roundup

The Southeast Dubois School Corporation also reminds residents of its Kindergarten Round up this week for children aged 5 by August 1st. Pine Ridge will hold their roundup Tuesday at 6:30pm, and Ferdinand Elementary’s will be Thursday at 6:30pm.

Parents are asked to bring the child’s original birth certificate and immunization records.
