Huntingburg City Employees Start Spanish Training

Thirteen Huntingburg city employees, including mayor Denny Spinner, started a 12 week reality Spanish class last Tuesday. Three members of the public are also taking the class.

Sister Karen Durliat with the Guadalupe Center organized the class. She says the class will assist city employees in understanding and reaching out to Huntingburg’s Hispanic population. She also says the course will teach cultural traditions.

The Reality Spanish Course has been offered in the community at different times in the past. Maria Ramirez will instruct this class in the Common Council Chambers at the Huntingburg City Hall on Tuesdays from 3 to 5 p.m.

Mayor Spinner says the class has been in the plans for a year.

The city of Huntingburg is paying for all employees to attend the classes, at a cost of $150 per person. The class is partially funded by training funds from the Huntingburg Transit Authority. The transit employees will be attending the course to assist with their daily interactions with the Spanish speaking members of the community.
