Jasper Men Arrested for Felony Fraud, Check Deception

A pair of Jasper men were arrested Thursday on Class C felony counts of check fraud and fraud on a financial institution and a Class D felony count of check deception.

Shawen SmithOfficers with the Jasper Police Department, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the U.S. Marshals Service arrested 22-year-old Shawen Smith, also known as Shawen Kinningham, and 20-year-old David Slaton at the Le Merigot hotel in Evansville

The arrests are a result of an investigation that alledges Smith and Slaton used fraudulent checks and checking accounts to purchase vehicles at Uebelhor & Sons in Jasper and attempts to gain cash at various banks in Huntingburg and Jasper.

The two vehicles involved were a 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche and a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu. Altogether, the pair attempted to defraud merchants and financial institutions out of nearly $75,000.

Jasper police say they plan to expand their investigation into surrounding communities and states and expect more charges.David Slaton

Slaton and Smith were lodged into the Dubois County Security Center yesterday afternoon.
