A two vehicle crash in Martin County early yesterday morning resulted in one driver being taken to an area hospital.

Indiana State Police say 26-year-old Jessica Neal of Loogootee was southbound on U.S. 231 just north of Water Tower Road just after 7 am yesterday morning when the accident took place.

Police say the vehicle in front of Neal suddenly slowed for an unknown reason. Neal hit the brakes to avoid the slowing vehicle and slid sideways to a stop, partially blocking the northbound lane of U.S. 231.

A second vehicle, driven by 35-year-old Aron Kelly of Leopold, was traveling northbound and attempted to swerve to avoid hitting Neal’s vehicle as it blocked the northbound lane. Police say when Kelly went to swerve, Kelly’s vehicle and Neal’s vehicle sideswiped each other.

Both Neal and Kelly were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. Kelly was transported to Jasper Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Neal was uninjured in the crash.

Neal was cited for speed too fast to avoid a collision. State Police Master Trooper Scott Miller says speed limits are effective in ideal conditions, but further caution should be exercised when conditions are less than ideal, such as when it is raining.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office, the Loogootee Fire Department, and the Haysville Fire Department all assisted at the scene.
