Firefighters with the Jasper Volunteer Fire Department were called into action early this morning on a fire at an abandoned home located along the 1300 block of 13th street.

Jasper fire chief Kenny Hochgesang says just after 4:30 this morning, neighbors awoke to the sound of popping and cracking at the rear of the house and called authorities. He said when firefighters arrived on the scene, a neighbor was using a garden hose to hold down the flames.

Hochgesang says the fire appeared to have started in the vicinity of a sofa in the back of the house. He said the sofa was consumed by fire by the time the department arrived and flames were touching the second story’s eaves. Firefighters kept the fire from spreading to the inner structure but the back of the house, including an exterior stairway leading to the second story, was burned. The structure’s interior sustained smoke and water damage. The cause is under investigation.

Hochgesang estimated damage to the home at about $10,000. 28 firefighters were on the scene for about an hour with four trucks with the assistance of the Dubois County Sheriff’s Department, the Jasper Police Department and Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services.

North Newton Street was blocked off between 9th Street and 13th Street for about an hour early this morning as firefighters worked to put out the fire.
