Flags to be Flown at Half Staff for Sermersheim

Jasper mayor Terry Seitz has requested that flags at all city facilities be flown at half staff from sunrise on Friday to sunrise on Monday of next week in honor of former mayor Benny Sermersheim.

Benny SermersheimSermersheim passed away on June 15th at Mangrove Bay Senior Residential Community in Jupiter, Florida. He was 102 years old.

Sermersheim served as a Jasper city councilman from 1960 through 1963. He was appointed as the 8th mayor of Jasper when then Mayor Edwin Knies died suddenly while in office. Sermersheim served the remainder of Knies’ term as mayor of Jasper.

Sermersheim also opened Sermersheim Auto and Home Supply Store in Jasper with the help of his brother, John “Junie” Sermersheim in 1947. He is also credited with bringing cable television to Jasper and Huntingburg in late 1960’s among other accomplishments.

Sermersheim’s funeral is set for this Saturday (July 6th) at 9:30 am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper. Entombment in Fairview Cemetary Mausoleum will follow the service.

Visitation for Sermersheim will be held this Friday from 4 till 8 pm at the Becher Kluesener Downtown Chapel in Jasper.
