A civil suit was filed late last week in Spencer Circuit Court by the Indiana Attorney General’s Office and North Spencer School Corporation against a former Heritage Hills High School and Middle School Extracurricular Treasurer who is believed to have embezzeled funds from the corporation.
An audit conducted by the State Board of Accounts late last year showed Melissa “Missy” Isaacs of Lamar is responsible for improperly accounting for more than $70,000 over the past six school years.
The audit shows Isaacs failed to deposit money collected from textbook rentals, school parking permits, athletic funds and school lunches. She also allegedly issued several checks to herself from various school funds.
The coroporation is looking to recover from Isaacs $71,923 to reimburse the school corporation for the missing deposits along with $34,134 to pay for the cost of conducting the audit.
The attorney general’s office will act as a collection agent for the state. Decisions about filing criminal charges are left to the discretion of the county prosecutor. Criminal charges againsy Isaacs have let to be filed.
A court hearing regarding the case is set for 11:30 am CDT next Monday.
