Knox County may soon have a new wheel tax.

The Knox County Commissioners have recently approved a resolution that calls for the implementation of such a tax.

County officials say there are hundreds of miles of roads in the county and those roads are currently falling apart, which has led to the proposal of a wheel tax.

The commissioners are currently suggesting a $25 fee per vehicle and a $5 fee per trailer. These proposals would generate roughly $1 million for roads in the county.

Opponents of a wheel tax say that the gas tax changes made by the Indiana General Assembly during this year’s legislative session will already give the county close to 1 million dollars in new road funding in each of the next two years.

The tax could be imposed under state law if both the Bicknell and Vincennes City Councils were to approve the tax.
