A Jasper High School teacher has recieved a prestigious award.

Julie Schnell, a 10th grade world history teacher at JHS, has been honored with a Peabody Energy Teacher of the Year Award for the 2012-2013 school year for Region 3, which encompasses 10 counties across west-central Indiana.

The award was presented to Schnell last Saturday evening along with 5 thousand Schnelldollars in cash at the Evansville Country Club. In all, 30 educators from Regions 2 and 3 were honored at the ceremony.

Schnell was recognized as a Peabody Energy Leader in Education back in May after being nominated by fellow JHS teacher Dana Kunz.

Jasper High School principal Brian Wilson says Schnell has made the high school teachers, students, and staff very proud. He says Schnell represents a commitment to excellence that everyone strives for on a day in and day out basis.

Schnell is known for re-creating famous events in history, such as the signing of the Treaty of Paris as well as for re-telling stories such as marital issues for King Henry VIII to help her students better understand the material. Schnell also has played a role in establishing advance placement world history courses, which will be offered at JHS starting next year.

Away from the classroom, Schnell is a volunteer with Students Against Drunk Driving and also helps with school dances. Additionally, she is a member of the School Improvement team and School Safety Committee at JHS.
