An accident in the northeastern part of Dubois County yesterday evening resulted in a woman being airlifted to an Evansville hospital with severe injuries.
Dubois County Sheriff’s deputies say 55-year-old Jill Heeke of French Lick was westbound on County Road 925 East about 1 mile south of State Road 56 at 5:50 pm last night when deputies say Heeke told them that a deer began to cross the road. Heeke told deputies she swerved left to avoid the deer, but overcorrected while going back to the right, causing her car to spin. Heeke’s car went off of the right side of the roadway and hit an embankment with the front of the car. Deputies say the vehicle then spun again, hit a tree on the driver’s side, and rolled over onto its side before finally coming to rest facing east.
Heeke was found to be intoxicated during the crash investigation. She initially refused medical treatment at the scene, but was taken into custody by deputies and taken to Memorial Hospital for medical clearance and treatment. Once at Memorial Hospital, deputies say it was discovered Heeke had suffered a broken neck in the crash. She was then transported to St. Mary’s hospital in Evansville. Heeke’s car was a total loss in the crash and Heeke was cited for Operating While Intoxicated.
Dubois First Responders, Dubois EMS, and a wrecker from Uelbehor’s assisted at the scene.
