The identity of a man killed in a crash last weekend has been released by police.
31-year-old Nathan Arthur of Loogootee was identified yesterday by Lawrence County Coroner Rob Herr. Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig says it was determined that Arthur died after suffering blunt force trauma. Police say Arthur had died by the time that police arrived at the scene of the accident, which took place at 12:53 am on Saturday morning.
According to police, the accident took place in Marshall Township along Elkins Road, which is just under a mile east of Sowders Road. Police say Arthur was driving west on Elkins Road when he hit a curve and ran off of the southside of the roadway. His car then hit a tree stump, flipped, and landed on its roof in a field, where it became engulfed in flames. A witness who told police he heard the accident says he believed that the vehicle was moving at a high rate of speed prior to the crash. The witness told police he saw the vehicle on fire and that’s when he called 9-1-1.
The accident report released by police yesterday shows that Arthur suffered severe head injuries in the crash and was buried under the wreckage of the car. It was unknown whether or not Arthur was wearing a seatbelt.
Toxicology results are still pending.
