Multiple Brush Fires Issue for Firefighters

Multiple brush fires on Saturday afternoon resulted in a run for Celestine Volunteer firefighters.

The Celestine Fire Department and Dubois County Sheriff’s deputies were called to an area between the 2000 block and 3500 block of Schnellville Road in reference to multiple brush/field fires at 4:40 pm on Saturday afternoon. Sheriff’s deputies say there were at least 5 different brush fires burning in the ditch lines as well as into the fields, all of which were located along the north side of Schnellville Road. All fires were quickly put out and monetary damage appears minimal according to sheriff’s deputies.

A caller to the sheriff’s department told deputies that burning embers from a grill that was either being pulled or hauled could have been the cause of the fires. The caller also stated that the responsible person or people may not have been aware that this had occurred.

A brush truck from the St. Anthony Fire Department also assisted at the scene. Dubois County sheriff’s deputies would like to remind folks that ditch lines and fields are dry at this time due to the recent lack of rainfall and carelessness can quickly cause fires that can rapidly spread out of control.
