Nearly $61,000 was collected by Dubois County officials as the county held it’s annual tax sale Thursday.

Indianapolis-based SRI Inc. conducted the sale on behalf of the county and offered 42 parcels to 24 bidders of which 23 of the properties were sold.

The properties had delinquent taxes that remained unpaid from the previous year. At the sale, real estate investors vied for a tax sale certificate, agreeing to pay what was owed in delinquent taxes, costs and penalties.

Investors can earn interest from delinquent property owners or eventually take ownership of the property through a post-tax sale process that involves petitioning the local court for a tax deed.

Some delinquent taxes were paid before Thursday’s sale. In all, the county collected $60,965.48 from owners and buyers. Taxes, penalties and costs were paid in full on 77 parcels.

The county commissioners will acquire a tax lien on the 19 properties that did not sell. Those properties may be offered at a later sale.
