INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – U.S. Senate Republicans have sampled authentic German cuisine from southern Indiana courtesy of Sen. Dan Coats.

Coats invited Jasper’s Schnitzelbank restaurant to cater the Republican Caucus’ weekly luncheon Thursday. The 45 Senate Republicans rotate catering the weekly lunch.

The Bavarian-themed meal included wiener schnitzel, hot German potato salad, sauerkraut, red cabbage, turnip kraut, spicy mustard and apple strudel with cinnamon ice cream. Coats said some senators went for second helpings.

Coats served as the U.S. Ambassador to Germany from 2001 to 2005. He says that during that time he came to enjoy German food and customs.
