SW Indiana Woman Sentenced to House Arrest After Large Theft

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) – An 81-year-old southwestern Indiana woman has been sentenced to four years of house arrest for her role in stealing nearly $300,000 from a Masonic women’s group in Evansville.

A Vanderburgh County judge who found Marilee Garrison guilty last month of conspiracy to commit theft told the Newburgh woman Tuesday she had betrayed the people who trusted her.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports (http://bit.ly/17EuRJM ) Garrison was a 49-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 555 and had served as its treasurer and chapter president.

Defense attorney Terry White says Garrison never saw any of the stolen money and had tried to cover up the actions of her daughter, Susan Hilgeman, who became the group’s treasurer in 2008 and is serving a prison sentence in the thefts.
