Mendel, Virginia

Virginia (Ginny) M. Mendel, age 73, of Jasper, Indiana, passed away at 2:11 p.m. Saturday, (July 18, 2015), in Memorial Hospital & Health Care Center in Jasper, Indiana.

Virginia was born in Jasper, Indiana on July 30, 1941 to Leo Sr. and Catherine (Heichelbech) Giesler.  She married Thomas L.  Mendel  May 3, 1962 in St. Ferdinand Catholic Church.

For many years she  manage the former  Heritage Inn and later the Split Rail Restaurants in Jasper.  She also was known for baking weddings cakes.

She was a member of Precious Blood Catholic Church, The Ladies Sodality and the St. Ann’s Society.

She enjoyed  cooking,  her flower Garden , grandchildren and Cardinal Baseball and IU Basketball.

Funeral services for Virginia M. Mendel  will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday (July22, 2015) in Precious Blood  Catholic Church in Jasper, with entombment  to follow in Fairview Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday (July21, 2015) at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper, Indiana.  Rosary will be held by the Ladies Sodality and members of Precious Blood and the  St. Ann’s Society at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday  at the funeral home.

Leinenbach, nathan

Nathan R. Leinenbach, age 38 of Ireland, Indiana, passed away at 7:00 a.m. on Monday (July 6, 2015) at home.

Nathan was born on June 30, 1977 in Huntingburg, Indiana to Stan and Claudette (Fromme) Leinenbach.   He married Lori Haase on June  10, 2006 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, IN.

Nathan worked in sales for Uebelhor and Son’s in Jasper, IN  and was a farmer in Ireland, IN.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, where he enjoyed volunteering with the church picnic, and was on the board of the preschool.  He also  organized various fundraisers to help families in need.

Nathan was a member of the Ireland Lion’s Club, the Ireland Sportsman’s Club,  and  was the president of the Ireland Youth Sports, where he had coached since 2006.

He was a graduate of the Jasper High School class of 1996 and was a co-captain and 2nd Baseman on the 1996 High School State Champion Baseball Team.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, was an avid Chicago Cub’s fan, and enjoyed spending time with his children.

William E. “Bill” Birge, age 72, of Avon, Indiana, formerly of Jasper, passed away at 7:50 p.m. on Friday (July 3, 2015) at St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Bill was born in Jasper, Indiana on July 14, 1942 to Cyril And Antoinette (Kunkel) Birge.

Bill was a 20-year U.S. Navy Veteran stationed on San Salvador Island, Bermuda, and San Diego, California, among others.  He lived in San Diego before moving back to Jasper in 1991, where he became co-owner and operator of The Gallery framing studio for almost 20 years.  He was a professional, published artist and contributed murals to the Dubois County Museum and 10th Street Elementary School.

He had a longtime interest in computers and taught basic computer classes to the elderly.  He had a love for animals, especially dogs, and for a time was active in K-9 search and rescue. He had a passion for astronomy and was a volunteer for the SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) Institute.

He enjoyed fishing, NASCAR, and football, especially the San Diego Chargers.

Marcella C. Weyer, 92 of Ferdinand passed away Sunday June 21,2015 in Brookside Village in Jasper. She was born February 25, 1923 in Saint Anthony, In. to Henry & Tillie (Burke) Hasenour. She married Leo G. Weyer on April 15,1948 in St. Anthony Catholic Church, St. Anthony. He preceded her in death on December 22,2001.

Surviving are a son, Kenneth Weyer and wife Patty of Ferdinand. 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by 2 sons, Michael and Charles Weyer, brother, Ray Hasenour, sisters, Lena Steffen, and Carrie Toby. 6 siblings in infancy, Birgita, Mary, Elizabeth, Bernard, Arnold, Andrew Hasenour.

Marcella was a member of Saint Ferdinand Parish and its St. Anns Sodality. She enjoyed quilting, listening to music, Bingo, watching game shows, and enjoyed spending time with her family.

Funeral services 9:00 AM Wednesday in St. Ferdinand Catholic Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Foster, Betty Lou

Betty Lou Foster, age 75 of Dubois, Indiana, passed away at 9:34 p.m. on Saturday (June 20,2015) in St. Charles Healthcare Campus in Jasper, IN.

She was born on September 2, 1939 in Dubois, Indiana to Urban and Marie (Mathies) Fischer.  She married Tommy L. Foster on October 29, 1966 in St. Raphael’s Catholic Church in Dubois, IN.

Betty was homemaker, and a graduate of Dubois High School Class of 1957.

She was a member of St. Raphael’s Catholic Church in Dubois, IN.

She enjoyed playing cards and bingo, reading, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Harder, Denise

Denise A. Harder, age 49, of Dubois, Indiana, passed away at 7:05 p.m. on Sunday (June 21, 2015) at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper, Indiana.

Denise was born on December 25, 1965 in Dubois, Indiana to Martin and Dorothy (Wolf) Harder.

She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church at the Dubois Crossroads.

She enjoyed listening to music and doing puzzles.  She also enjoyed bowling in the Special Olympics.

Hilda Anna Davis, 84, of Mariah Hill, passed away, Saturday, June 20th at Scenic Hills Care Center in Ferdinand. Hilda was born January 28, 1931 in Jasper, to Otto and Florentina (Lindauer) Tretter. She married Paul Davis on October 15, 1955 in Huntingburg United Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on July 2, 1995. Hilda enjoyed quilting and traveling with her husband. She was a bank teller at First National Bank Huntingburg.

Hilda is survived by a sister, Vernita Burgdorf and husband John of Huntingburg. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Hilda was preceded in death by a son, Steven Payne and a sister, Dorothy Nord.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, at 10:00 AM CDT in Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Mariah Hill with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
