Fr. Aelred Cody, OSB, monk and priest of Saint Meinrad Archabbey, St. Meinrad, IN, died onMay 11, 2015, in the monastery infirmary. He was 83 and a jubilarian of both profession and ordination.
Surviving is a brother, Robert Cody of Ames, IA.
Fr. Aelred was born in Oklahoma City, OK, on February 3, 1932, and given the name Joseph Francis Jr. at his baptism. After completing his elementary and high school education at the Cathedral schools in Oklahoma City, he briefly attended the School of Music at the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City.
Transferring to Saint Meinrad College, he was invested as a novice in 1951 and professed his simple vows on August 1, 1952. In 1955, he professed his solemn vows and graduated from the college, receiving the first of six degrees he would acquire over the next 15 years. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 3, 1957.
In addition to his college BA in philosophy, he received STL and STD degrees from Ottawa University, an SSL from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, an SSD from the Pontifical Biblical Commission, and an Élève dīplômé from the Ecole biblique at archéologique française de Jérusalem.
He authored an extensive list of publications, including books, entries in encyclopedias and reference works, articles, and essays in a half-dozen languages.
His involvement in the world of professional biblical scholarship covers half a century. Examples include his service as a trustee and a member of the Executive Board of the Catholic Biblical Association of America, as an associate editor and then general editor of the Catholic Biblical Quarterly, as a member of the Consultative Committee of Concilium, and as a member of the Editorial Board of Biblica.
From 2003 to 2005, he served first as vice-president and then president of the Catholic Biblical Society of America. He was also a member of the International Organization for the Study of the Old Testament and the Society of Biblical Literature.
In 1970, he was appointed as consultor to the Holy See for the opening session of the Mixed Study Commission of the Roman Catholic Church and the World Alliance of Reformed Churches. In 1981, he was appointed by the United States Bishops’ Committee as a member of the Oriental Orthodox-Roman Catholic Consultation in the United States.
Fr. Aelred was a professor at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome from 1968-1978, serving for two of those years also as procurator for the Swiss-American and American Cassinese congregations. He returned to Saint Meinrad in 1978 where, in addition to continuing his scholarship, he served as novice-junior Master for 14 years.
He served many years as an elected member of the Swiss-American Congregation Council of the Abbot-President, as Saint Meinrad’s elected delegate to the Swiss-American General Chapter, and as an elected or appointed member of the Saint Meinrad Archabbot’s Council.
An accomplished organist, he was a member of London’s Royal College of Music and Royal College of Organists.
The Office of the Dead will be prayed at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12, in the Archabbey Church, followed by visitation until 9 p.m. Visitation on Wednesday will be from 8 to 9:45 a.m. in the Archabbey Church, followed by the funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in the Archabbey Cemetery.
